Papua New Guinea

Papua New Guinea is the eastern half of the world's second largest island. It is located just north of the continent of Australia, and just south of the equator. The whole island is called New Guinea. The western half is called Irian Jaya and is part of Indonesia. Irian Jaya is also called "West Papua."

There is no comma in the name Papua New Guinea. The word Papua, actually means "fuzzy haired," and usually sounds like "pop-wa" when it is pronounced.

Papua New Guinea's birthday is September 16, 1975. On that date the country officially gained its independence after a long colonial period under Australia.

The terrain is beautiful and ranges in elevation from sea level to 14,792 feet.

Most of the people are very warm hearted and friendly.
